数日前に、セルフレジを導入した店舗が万引き対策に悩んでいるという記事を読んだ。
さもありなん。
性善説に頼ったシステムは、残念ながら現代の日本では通用しないのだ。
私は、スーパーでもセルフレジは一切、利用したことがない。
店側の人件費を削りたいという意志が見え見えだからだ。
レジの作業を客にやらせることで、コストカットができる。
しかし、同時に万引きが増える。
コストカット分と万引きの被害額。
実際どちらが多いのかは知る由もないのだが。
とにかく、私はあのシステムが大嫌いだ。
ユニクロもあのシステムになってから行っていない。
近所のローソンが基本セルフレジになってから行っていない。
日本中の全てのコンビニがセルフレジオンリーになったら、生涯、コンビニに行くことはないだろう。
A few days ago, I read an article about how stores that have introduced self-checkout are struggling to prevent shoplifting.
I can’t say I’m surprised.
Unfortunately, a system that relies on people acting in good faith simply doesn’t work in modern-day Japan.
As for me, I’ve never used a self-checkout at a supermarket—not even once.
The reason is simple: it’s obvious that the stores are trying to cut labor costs.
By making customers scan and pay for their own purchases, they reduce staffing expenses.
At the same time, though, shoplifting inevitably increases.
I have no way of knowing which is greater in the end—the savings from lower labor costs or the losses from theft.
Either way, I absolutely hate the whole system.
I haven’t shopped at Uniqlo since they switched to self-checkout.
I also stopped going to my neighborhood Lawson after it became mostly self-checkout.
If every convenience store in Japan ever went completely self-checkout, I probably wouldn’t set foot in one again for the rest of my life.
