もし、ジャンヌ・ダルクがこの世に現れなかったとしたら、イギリスの正式名称は、今頃このようになっていたかもしれない。
それほどまでに、彼女の存在はフランスの歴史にとって決定的だった。

百年戦争の最中、劣勢に立たされていたフランスを精神的に、そして象徴的に救った存在——それがジャンヌ・ダルクである。
まさに「フランスの救世主」と呼ぶにふさわしい人物だろう。

日本にジャンヌ・ダルクが現れていたら？

ここで、ひとつの仮定をしてみたい。
もしジャンヌ・ダルクのような存在が日本に現れていたとしたら、彼女は卑弥呼以上の伝説的存在になっていたのではないだろうか。

天照大御神が地上に降臨した存在——
そう捉えられていたとしても、決して不思議ではない。

おそらく、今頃は彼女を祀る立派な神社が建立され、
多くの参拝者が後を絶たない存在となっていたはずだ。
日本の宗教観・神話観から考えれば、それはごく自然な帰結とも言える。

フランスでのジャンヌ・ダルクの運命

しかし、現実のフランスにおいて、ジャンヌ・ダルクは火刑に処された。
わずか19歳。魔女の疑いをかけられ、政治と宗教の犠牲となった結果である。

その後、裁判はやり直され、名誉は回復された。
さらに時を経て、ローマ教皇によって「聖人」に列せられることになる。

だが、現代フランスの学校教育におけるジャンヌ・ダルクの扱いは、
必ずしも「フランスの救世主」という単純な英雄像ではないようだ。

なぜジャンヌ・ダルクは語りにくい存在なのか

彼女はあまりにも象徴的で、あまりにも純粋だった。
国家、宗教、理性、近代思想——
どの枠組みにも、きれいに収まらない存在だからこそ、
現代社会では扱いにくいのかもしれない。

それでもなお、もし彼女がいなければ、
フランスという国家の形そのものが、
まったく違うものになっていた可能性は否定できない。

歴史における「もしも」を考えるとき、
ジャンヌ・ダルクほど、その存在の重さを実感させる人物は稀だろう。

If Joan of Arc had never appeared in history, the official name of the United Kingdom today might have looked very different.
It is not entirely implausible to imagine a Britain that once included France itself.

That is how decisive Joan of Arc’s presence was in French history.

During the Hundred Years’ War, France was politically divided and militarily disadvantaged.
Joan of Arc emerged as a powerful spiritual and symbolic figure who helped restore morale and unity.
In that sense, calling her the savior of France is not an exaggeration.

If Joan of Arc Had Appeared in Japan

Let us consider a hypothetical scenario.

If a figure like Joan of Arc had appeared in Japan, she might have become an even greater legendary presence than Queen Himiko.
It would not have been surprising if people had viewed her as a manifestation of divine will—perhaps even as a living embodiment of Amaterasu, the Sun Goddess.

At the very least, it is easy to imagine grand shrines dedicated to her, visited by countless worshippers.
From the perspective of Japanese religious and mythological traditions, such reverence would feel natural rather than excessive.

Joan of Arc’s Fate in France

In reality, however, Joan of Arc met a tragic end in France.
At just nineteen years old, she was burned at the stake after being accused of heresy and witchcraft—a result of political and religious power struggles.

Years later, her trial was retried, her name was cleared, and she was ultimately canonized as a saint by the Roman Catholic Church.
Yet even today, her position in French education is not framed simply as “the savior of France.”

Why Joan of Arc Remains Difficult to Define

Joan of Arc was too symbolic and too uncompromisingly pure to fit neatly into modern categories.
She resists easy classification—whether as a nationalist hero, a religious figure, or a rational historical actor.

Perhaps that is why contemporary society struggles to fully embrace her legacy.

Still, one conclusion seems unavoidable:
without Joan of Arc, the very shape of France as a nation might have been fundamentally different.

Few figures in history make us feel the weight of a single individual’s existence as profoundly as Joan of Arc does.
